Daring designs
Some architects seek to build daring structures that make people gasp. However, for London-based architects Studio RHE, the vision was to make the Seascape and The Sanctuary residences almost indistinguishable from the natural drama of an unspoiled private island. The vistas and rock formations offered by the private island of Félicité in the Seychelles archipelago were all the inspiration they needed. It’s a test of an architect’s lack of ego to design a home that appears almost invisible to the naked eye.
Architect Richard Hywel Evans from Studio RHE shares that the challenge was not to build but to blend. He created a meaningful, award-winning architectural design using local materials as far as possible so as not to detract but simply add to the natural environment, as he goes on to explain: “The residences are designed to emerge gently from the hillside as rough granite, the same material, and follow the hillside angle. The plan is able to react to each site individually to leave any unique features untouched while framing others.”
Stealth architecture
With an over-arching emphasis on space and total privacy on the island, the cliff-top Seascape and The Sanctuary residences are built right into the granite landscape. Hugged by stark silhouettes of granite boulders, azure waters, sublime beaches, verdant jungles, and rare flora and fauna, they offer a seductive and secluded space for uncompromising comfort.
Taking the plunge pool to the next level (ceiling level, to be exact), Richard tells us, “My favorite feature has to be the clear-bottom swimming pools over the main reception area; they provide cool light down to the room below and are a lot of fun!” This quirky touch perfectly embodies the ethos of ‘stealth architecture’ – blending striking design with the raw beauty of its surroundings.

The spa includes five individual double villas: the Ocean Villa is set right above the sea with 180-degree ocean views; the glass-fronted Rock Villa is constructed between large granite boulders; the Cave Villa with its private steam shower and swinging day bed; the Nature Villa surrounded by lush foliage and trees, and, the Floating Villa built on a large rock with an outdoor deck for post-treatment relaxation.
There is an elevated saltwater pool with a sundeck, yoga and meditation pavilion, and sauna and steam rooms. A top deck has been strategically positioned for mesmerizing views over the sapphire ocean.
