April 17, 2019 - Tick a Maldives vacation off your bucket list with discounted rates, sea turtle hatching and manta courtship season plus a host of Visiting Practitioners and pop-up events with celebrity chefs.
Sometimes you don’t know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory and Six Senses Laamu is determined to make each one a happy one for you and your family.
Let’s start on the water. The waves are consistently great from May to September and, being the only resort in the atoll, you’ll have them to yourselves. The resort is located just minutes away from five different surf breaks. Some are kind to beginners. Others, such as the famous Yin Yang reef break, lay down a challenge for more seasoned surfers. The adventure is extra colorful in the lead up to International Surfing Day on June 20, with a host of events planned for guests, hosts and members of local surf clubs.
One of the most spectacular and moving natural events you will witness in Laamu this summer will be sea turtle hatching. In 2018, the resort had a record number of 32 turtle nests and the hatching season continued right through February 2019. With a thriving population of the endangered hawksbill and green turtles around the atoll, our marine biologists hope that from May onward the beach will be a busy nesting ground for these magnificent megafaunas.
Laamu is also a dream destination for divers. It has the only year-round active manta ray cleaning stations in the Maldives. The divers at Hithadhoo Corner are in for a treat from May to July and October to November when courtship is high up on the mantas’ minds. The rare manta chain dance is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience to witness, during which the female tests the males’ strength and stamina by leading them on a dance, looping, swerving, and diving incredibly fast until there is only one male left to mate with.
With all of these extraordinary marine events happening around the resort, this summer will be a special time for budding nature enthusiasts and conservationists of all ages. Our younger VIPs can team up with our marine experts and complete exciting tasks to become a certified Junior Marine Biologist before the end of their vacation.
On land (or more precisely in the kitchen), Denmark’s favorite Masterchef Judge Jesper Koch will hold a series of culinary events at LEAF restaurant. Jesper’s approach to creating authentic, healthy, balanced and down to earth dishes blends well with our core philosophies of sustainability and organic food concepts. Other dining options include Zen, a unique Japanese restaurant that serves a traditional Kaiseki menu with a modern twist, and Longitude, a two-story overwater restaurant that serves up international cuisine. Sip Sip (the clue’s in the name) offers a sunken bar and adjacent poolside seating.
For stargazers, Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society Dr. Parag Mahajani will be in the resort to tell you about the most interesting celestial events. He’ll be taking advantage of the minimal light pollution and many days of clear skies to take you on a tour of the galaxies and solar system. Next stop Saturn.
No visit to the atoll is complete without some spa-aah time. A whole host of Visiting Practitioners from yogis to energy healers are already booked in to the busy calendar at our award-winning Six Senses Spa Laamu.
