The road to Punakha from Thimphu winds and climbs through pine forests and passes streams, waterfalls, chortens (stupas) and prayer flags, rising to Dochu La Pass, with its wonderful vistas, at an elevation of 10,223 feet (3,116 meters). Gradually the road descends during the 90-minute drive to Punakha Valley, one of the lowest lying valleys in Bhutan and the market garden of the country, where produce grows year-round, and many Bhutanese reside during the cooler winter months.
With a lower altitude and temperate climate, Punakha is the market garden of the country. Produce grows year-round and it is the preferred winter destination of the Bhutanese. Six Senses hotel in Punakha, Bhutan, offers a choice of suites and villas, pool, boutique, yoga and meditation huts. A highlight is a visit to Punakha Dzong.
